Methadone Drug Rehab
Methadone addiction is very prevalent, with the largest population of addicts being those that are registered in a methadone treatment program and usually take between 5-200mgs of methadone per day. Methadone addiction is more difficult to recover from than heroin or almost any other narcotic, so it is hardly an effective treatment for those persons that want to live without the influence of drugs in their lives.
Methadone was developed by German scientists who synthesized it during World War II because of the shortage of morphine to treat the wounded casualities of the war. Although chemically unlike morphine or heroin, methadone produces many of the same effects. Introduced into the US in 1947 as an analgesic named Dolophine, it is primarily used today for the maintainence of opiate addicts, to curb their cravings for illicit opiates. The effects of methadone last up to 24 hours, as opposed to heroin that requires repeated doses every four to six hours. This allows methadone to be given in once-a-day oral administration for heroin withdrawals, however, it is quite ineffective in this regard since it merely transfers the addiction from a heroin addiction to a methadone addiction. Chronic administration of methadone results in tolerance and addiction at a very high level with the patient being numbed by the “medicine” throughout his treatment. Those persons that are on chronic doses of methadone will experience a depletion in their calcium levels and, over time, calcium will be drained from the bones causing the rotting of teeth and the breaking of large bones in the body.
It is even more devastating to the emotional and intellectual faculties of those on long-term use since it lowers ones perceptions of their environment which hinders successful rehabilitation.
